Useful Legal Tidbit
Even though it’s obvious to anyone with a functional frontal lobe and a shred of morality, we feel the need to include this disclaimer. This website (which openly advocates for the cancellation of a beloved television series) is in no way, shape or form affiliated with the FOX Network, the News Corporation, subsidiaries thereof, or any of Rupert Murdoch’s wives or children. “The Simpsons” is (unfortunately) the intellectual property of FOX. We and our crack team of one (1) lawyer believe that everything on this site falls under the definition of Fair Use and is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. No revenue is generated from this endeavor; we’re here because we love “The Simpsons”. And besides, you can’t like, own a potato, man, it’s one of Mother Earth’s creatures.
Stuff like this is probably the best indication of how great this show is, and how terrible the show is now. One minor, brief joke about a character’s love of Andy Williams in an episode of television that aired 16 years ago – is everywhere, quoted repeatedly after his death. And it’s like that when virtually everyone the show mentions dies.
When, I don’t know, Treat Williams dies, who is going to remember his guest appearance in that episode last season? That’s right: nobody.
“When, I don’t know, Treat Williams dies, who is going to remember his guest appearance in that episode last season? That’s right: nobody.”
I’d have a devil of a time collecting enough of them to make a decent post, but that is exactly the impression I get. When someone who was on Zombie Simpsons dies, their appearance tends to get noted like so: “[blank] was also known for doing guest appearances on The Simpsons, other show, other show, and other show”. When someone had a part in an earlier episode that even people who aren’t huge Simpsons fans can quote, it’s more like this, with the quote flying back and forth and it getting mentioned much more prominently. Can’t prove it, but that’s definitely how it feels.
It’s the sheen in Nelson’s eyes that totally sells this. And I agree with Gran2 – the guest star appearances in the past had heft and weight and context. Now it’s just blip on someone’s IMDb page.
As soon as I heard Williams had passed away the following things happened:
1. I thought that was very sad, and remembered that I liked him a lot when I was a little kid.
2. I said “Wow, I didn’t think he was gonna do Moon River, but then BAM second encore!”
3. I thought, “Dead Homer Society will be on this one…”
Reblogged this on peux.
I don’t know if The Simpsons turned sour because other adult cartoons came to hog the spotlight (and steal the talent if Futurama is to be blamed) or if it was just timing, but its a really interesting sequence of events whenever a pioneer falters and imitators come to fill the void.
And yes, if you were mentioned on the Simpsons during its prime, you might as well have the way they mentioned you carved on your tombstone.
This never fails to get a laugh out of me.
