    I’ve always loved this joke; if you don’t know what irony is, you think the phrase “how ironic” is the joke, if you DO you know what irony is you realise that Skinner is mocking Homer because no one actually expected Homer to catch Malloy. Or at least I think that’s what’s going on.

    I’ve always assumed Skinner was just being momentarily stupid

      I always thought Skinner was being sarcastic – by the tone in Homer’s voice, the latter seems to think that there is some irony to be found in the turn of events, though Homer would understand the word about as well as Alanis Morissette does.

    That’s the fun of irony jokes, they allow you to trap yourself in a Mobius strip of meta about whether it’s the dictionary definition of irony or the more colloquial one. Either way the joke works.
