    I never noticed the symbolism behind this scene before. That’s The Simpsons for you: they keep on giving.

          I don’t think this scene has any symbolism whatsoever. Burns just treats Smithers like shit (as always), and it just shows us how mean and cruel he is.

        The idle rich riding (quite literally in this case, which I like) on the back of the too reverent and excessively hard working lower classes. Can’t believe I never noticed before.
        The one in which they’re riding in the park, Smithers is stung by a bee (which he’s allergic to), but still rides himself to the hospital though close to death – upon which Mr Burns is the one treated by an elitist health care system – also works well.
