It is just me or this is a kinda bad QotD?

    Homer: [says something]
Daphne: [contradicts Homer, semi joke-free setup for Homer’s next line]
    Homer: [weak punchline]

Oh well, never been a fan of someone being instantly contradicted in comedies.

Honestly, I’d say this is one of the better ideas for a Homer-gets-a-new-job episode, because “food critic” is something that Homer would naturally strive for, as opposed to being a spring salesman. The incompetence also flows pretty naturally, because Homer has low standards. Still, problem is, it mostly ends up being the same joke over and over: Homer gives a good review to everything.

It’d be funnier if they went the opposite direction. Say, Homer earned his reputation as a food critic because he finds the usual fancy foods (caviar, for instance) to be disgusting, meaning “He gave a bad review to a five-star restaurant! He’s the hardest customer in Springfield!” And you could get a joke about him ordering a cheeseburger at a French fine dining establishment, which he does because he doesn’t recognize anything on the menu, but they believe to be him playing mindgames by deliberately ordering an easy-to-prepare meal. Then the plot comes to a quick resolution when he gives a positive review to the local Krustyburger, and promptly torpedoes his reputation.

I dunno. It’s just hard to believe that somebody would get hired for doing positive reviews, especially today, when there’s practically entire subcultures based around the opposite.
