“Just make a pass at your commanding officer.”
“Done and done! And I mean done.”
That make a pass joke is one that flies over your head when you are a kid. I certainly did not get it until I was older.
On the dvd of this episode there is a deleted part of this scene where Homer shares his plan to get Ned fired by nailing all the school furniture to the ceiling in order to drive Ned crazy. Before seeing it I always thought it was odd how Homer was present and wants to help get Ned fired but he doesn’t add anything.
The DVD also has this episode’s animatic, which reveals a deleted ending wherein Homer drives a bulldozer through the wall of Springfield Elementary. I like to think the writers saw that in rough animation and went “Y’know what, this is way too fucking stupid” and toned it down to the nice simple ending we got. Good call.
If only they had that kind of restraint these days.
I still find the deleted scenes from these episodes to be funnier and more entertaining than pretty much anything of what’s been produced over the last decade.
And cut jokes from drafts. Astronaut Wife Malibu Stacy is pure gold.
