Even though I love this episode, it must have been a little jarring for older fans the first time around. Marge acts so out of character when she starts turning to thrill-seeking prior to becoming a cop (though I love the VHS titles and the “deviled ham” line) and yet the entire episode is so hilarious and entertaining, I never gave it any thought until years later.
See, Zombie Simpsons, people could maybe forgive a little OOC (but not a lot) if you can at least make the episode fun and interesting.
I don’t think it’s out of character, really. Looking back at her history where she wanted to be a painter or an astronaut, Marge has always been the type of person who could’ve done a lot of exciting things in life, but the people around her discouraged her so much that she ultimately resigned herself to a quiet peaceful career of taking care of her family, because she felt that was more important. Then, in this episode, in trying to get Homer’s money back from Snake, she found herself in a position where she had to act fast, and she realized she likes the rush – her life could be more interesting after all, even while she continued to protect and help people.
I think it makes perfect sense, and it’s one of my favorite episodes because of that exploration. Marge is a more interesting character than people tend to give her credit for.
You make a good argument, and I also think Marge is an underrated character by the fans. It just seems to go against the Marge Simpson we knew who petitioned against Itchy & Scratchy’s cartoon violence, among other things. It’s been shown a number of times that Marge isn’t totally perfect, although a lot of little things get cut in syndication (leaving the room briefly to laugh at Flanders’ letter, joining in the “You don’t win friends with salad” conga line), but showing interest in “Death Sports” just seemed like a bit of a stretch to me. Her finally making the decision to become a cop, however, made perfect sense and set up lots of great jokes (“Wow, Mom, I never pictured you as any kind of authority figure before!”)
